Songs and Dances for Flute and Guitar

Flautist André Oosthuizen, and Guitarist Thinus Boshoff, both NWU School of Music and Conservatory staff members, comes together in an ensemble collaboration. Flute and guitar music is considered one of the most well-balanced and a very pleasant ensemble combination. The programme offers a variety of North- and South-American Songs and Dances specifically composed for this instrument combination, from American Composer Robert Beaser’s Mountain Songs to the Brazilian folk melodies by Celso Machado. Traveling South to Argentina, presenting the warm-hearted pinnacle of Astor Piazzolla’s compositions Histoire du tango (History of the Tango). Aware of how much the tango had changed during his lifetime, Piazzolla composed Histoire du tango in 1985 to celebrate the dance in four different eras. He attempts to convey the history and evolution of the tango in four movements: Bordello 1900, Café 1930, Nightclub 1960, and Concert d’Aujourd’hui, showing how tango music travelled from being played in Cafés and Nightclubs to big Concert Halls.
