JS Bach per arco e plettro: Sonatas for violincello and harpsichord

JS Bach per Arco 2 JS Bach Per Arco 1

With: Berthine van Schoor (cello), John Reid Coulter (harpsichord)

The three sonatas for violoncello and harpsichord by JS Bach were originally intended for viola da gamba and harpsichord. With the exception of the D major sonata, the G major and g minor sonatas exist in other forms as well. Both have movements scored as organ trios or as a trio sonata for two traversos and continuo. There is also a debate surrounding the G minor sonata as a possible seventh Brandenburg Concerto due to similar textures found in the six extant Brandenburg Concertos. However these beautiful works remain intensely engaging for both listeners and players.
