The three sonatas for violoncello and harpsichord by JS Bach were originally intended for viola da gamba and harpsichord. With the exception of the D major sonata, the G major and g minor sonatas exist in other forms as well. Both have movements scored as organ trios or as a trio sonata for two traversos and continuo. There is also a debate surrounding the G minor sonata as a possible seventh Brandenburg Concerto due to similar textures found in the six extant Brandenburg Concertos. However these beautiful works remain intensely engaging for both listeners and players.
