Youth Dance Company of Tshwane (YDCT) has been in existence since 2002. The company was founded by three former ballet professionals Sue Kirkland, Christopher Montague and Tanja Graafland, the latter two were principal dancers during the heyday of PACT and the State Theatre Ballet. The company specialises in performance based training, where young students are given a feel for the rigours of a professional dance company. “Of course being a professional takes a different kind of discipline and passion, because ultimately it becomes your profession, but we demand excellence and discipline from our dancers that is rarely seen today” says Artistic Director, Sue Kirkland. “We have had a number of students go on to join both Jo’burg Ballet and Cape Town City Ballet while others have become respected teachers and successful choreographers.”
The company will be performing for the third time at the Wakkerstroom Music Festival this year. The programme brings a unique blend of both classical and neo-classical works which celebrate the beauty of dance in its many incarnations. Our dancers, ranging in age from 10 to 17, will tackle works that require strong technique, musicality and artistry. Audiences will see excerpts from the classics Sleeping Beauty, Coppelia, Paquita and Les Sylphide. This diverse programme promises to entertain all lovers of dance and music, young and old.
