Berthine van Schoor (cello), Annalien Ball (piano)The year 2025 marks the anniversaries of several composers who wrote music for cello and piano: Louise Farrenc, Maurice Ravel, Arvo Pärt and Dmitri Shostakovich. In this programme, the duo will perform the Cello Sonata by French composer Louise Farrenc, written in 1859. The sonata was lost for many years but was reprinted recently and is being performed by cellists worldwide. Also on the programme: “Spiegel im Spiegel” by Arvo Pärt, one of his best-known and most performed pieces. Maurice Ravel’s “Habanera” and “Pavane” were transcribed for cello and piano and remain some of his most loved works by cellists. The Cello Sonata in d minor op 40 by Dmitri Shostakovich is one of the most essential works in the 20th-century cello repertoire. The concert will end with the wild second movement, Allegro.
